Rockford, Ill- Chicago Blackhawks General Manager of Minor League Affiliations Mark Bernard announced Monday that the Rockford IceHogs, members for the American Hockey League, have signed defenseman Ben Youds (YOWDS) and goaltender Carter Hutton to one-year AHL contracts.

Youds, 23, joins the IceHogs after completing his collegiate career with Minnesota State University – Mankato (NCAA). In 2010-11, the 5-11, 180-pound defenseman tallied 21 points (7g-14a) in 37 tilts for the Mavericks. He also led the team in scoring during the 2009-10 season, totaling 26 points and a collegiate career-best 23 assists.

“We’re very excited about the addition of Ben Youds as he impressed all of our staff at the past two Prospect Camps in Chicago and is coming off an excellent collegiate career,” said Bernard. “We look forward to watching his development over the next year.”

During his time in the WCHA, the Maple Grove, Minn. native compiled 67 points (11g-56a) in 145 contests. Youds was also a member of the 2006 USA National U-18 team.

Hutton, 26, appeared in 22 games for the Worcester Sharks (AHL) in 2010-11, posting an 11-7-2 record with a goals-against average of 3.01 and a save percentage of .902 with two shutouts.  He also backed up in San Jose with the Sharks for 13 games last season. Combined with a short stint with the Adirondack Phantoms (AHL) in 2009-10, the 6-1, 184-pound goaltender has compiled a 12-9-3 record at the pro level with a 2.96 GAA and a .912 SPCT.

“With the addition of Carter we have added great depth to the goaltending position as he is coming off a very good rookie season where he not only spent time in the AHL but also at the NHL level in San Jose,” said Bernard.

“Both of these players bring exceptional qualities in the locker room and on the ice, but once again, their character is what stands out and that is why they are a part of our organization.”

Hutton spent his four-year collegiate career with University of Massachusetts – Lowell (NCAA) and compiled a 32-41-10 record with a 2.36 GAA and a .911 SPCT. During the 2009-10 season, the Thunder Bay, Ontario native was named a Hockey East Second Team All-Star and the Bauer Goaltender Champion.
