Rockford, Ill.- Chicago Blackhawks General Manager of Minor League Affiliations Mark Bernard announced Monday that the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League have signed Center Justin Hodgman to a one-year AHL contract.
The Brampton, Ontario native, 21, is entering his first full professional campaign after four seasons with the Erie Otters (OHL). He finished his junior hockey career with 217 points (87g-130a) and 264 PIMs in 254 games. His top season came in 2007-08, when he led the Otters with 80 points (37g-43a) in 64 games and then joined the Fort Wayne Komets for the remainder of the International Hockey League season.
“Justin Hodgman will be a great depth player for us in his first year as a professional and will spend time both in Rockford and Toledo,” Bernard said. “He is an offensive player who is also very good in the defensive zone and has already had success at the pro level, winning two Turner Cups in the past two years. People who win championships are the type of people that we want in our locker room.”
With Fort Wayne, the pivot appeared in 11 games, finishing with eight points (4g-4a) and then helped the team to the Turner Cup Championship over Port Huron with 14 points (7g-7a) in 13 postseason games. He led the league in scoring during the Turner Cup Playoffs and earned the Turner Cup MVP as a result.
Hodgman returned to the Komets after the 2008-09 Erie season ended, notching five points (2g-3a) in six regular season games and 12 points (7g-5a) in the Turner Cup Playoffs. He finished third in scoring in the postseason and helped the Komets to their second straight Turner Cup Championship.
