Hogs can’t top Wolves in the shootout

Rosemont, Ill.-
The shootout wasn’t kind to the Rockford IceHogs on Wednesday night as they fell to the Chicago Wolves 3-2 at the Allstate Arena and 1-0 in the shootout.

A strong start for the IceHogs put them on top early in Chicago. Bryan Bickell picked up a rebound off of a Nathan Davis shot and cashed in his second goal of the season beating Manny Legace at 4:51.  Brakcen Kearns also figured in on the scoring with an assist.

Chicago got the goal back, however, as Tim Stapleton tallied short handed. Stapleton picked up an Arturs Kulda pass and wrapped his fifth goal of the season around Corey Crawford at 10:28 of the frame.

In the second period the Wolves grabbed the lead at 4:12. Brett Sterling jammed in a Spencer Machacek centering feed for his third goal of the season. Chris Chelios marked the secondary assist.

Rockford would tie the game late in the stanza after digging out a puck from behind the Wolves goal. Evan Brophey won the battle and found Bickell on the right half wall who in return found Nathan Davis on the doorstep. Davis deflected in his fifth goal of the season at 16:41.

After a scoreless third period and overtime, Rockford and Chicago went to a shootout. Legace turned away all five Rockford shooters in the extra session while Crawford allowed the only shootout goal as Stapleton tallied in the second round.

Rockford outshot Chicago 34-26 in the contest and both teams failed to score on the power play. The IceHogs finished 0-5 on the advantage while holding the Wolves to 0-7.

Next Home Game: Saturday, Oct. 31 vs. Milwaukee Admirals. The puck is set to drop at 7:05 p.m. The first 2,500 fans into the building will pickup an IceHogs aluminum water bottle compliments of Rock Valley Culligan and 97ZOK. Trick or Treat with the IceHogs is back as any kids 12 or under at the game will be invited on the ice after the game to trick or treat with the players. Children must be in costume to participate.
